This morning we drive north along the Mediterranean coast to tour the city ruins of Caesarea, ancient capital of Roman Palestine, and see the theater, aqueduct, hippodrome (which could seat over 20,000 people), and Crusader fortress. We then climb Mount Carmel and visit the traditional site of Elijah’s battle with the prophets of Baal. Here we also enjoy the sweeping panoramic view of the Jezreel Valley from atop the mountain. We travel on to the ruins of Megiddo, the Biblical Armageddon, where we see Ahab’s stables and the famous water system. We conclude our day in Nazareth, site of the boyhood of Jesus, for a visit to Mary’s Well at St. Gabriel's Church, and the Church of the Annunciation, commemorating the location where Mary was visited by the Archangel Gabriel. We stop at a baptismal site on the River Jordan before proceeding to Tiberias and the Kibbutz Maa'gan on the shore of the Sea of Galilee. (B,D)

DAY 4, TUE, MAY 15 MT. OF BEATITUDES/DAN/CAESAREA PHILIPPI/SEA OF GALILEE/CAPERNAUM/ TIBERIAS

After a visit to the Mount of Beatitudes, we travel towards the foothills of Mount Hermon to Old Testament Dan, which marked the northern limit of the land of Israel. Here we see a mud-brick gate from the Bronze Age - the time of Abraham, the cultic high place attributed to kings Jeroboam and Ahab, and an inscription mentioning King David. We proceed to Banias (Caesarea Philippi), where Jesus said, “I will build my church...” We travel back through the Golan Heights past Gadara, one of the Decapolis cities. Matthew describes the miracle of Jesus delivering demon-possessed men who were "of the country of the Gadarenes." A highlight of the day will be a lunch of St. Peter's fish. This afternoon we visit the ruins of ancient Capernaum where the greater part of Jesus’ ministry of teaching and healing took place. We see the ancient synagogue and the excavations of Peter’s house. From there we continue to Tabgha, the traditional site of the multiplication of loaves and fishes and also see the nearby Church of the Primacy of St. Peter. We drive past Magdala, home of Mary Magdalene, and stop at the Kibbutz Ginosar to see the 1st-century "Jesus Boat," which was discovered in 1986 partially buried in the muddy shores of the Sea of Galilee. From here, we enjoy a memorable boatride on the Sea of Galilee back to Tiberias for dinner and overnight. (B,L,D)

DAY 5, WED, MAY 16 QUMRAN/EIN GEDI/MASADA/DEAD SEA

We travel south through the Jordan Valley past New Testament Jericho, believed to have been at the mouth of the Wadi Kelt, where Herod had his winter palace. From here we can see the Mount of Temptation. We visit Qumran, where the Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered, and then we continue to the oasis of Ein Gedi, where David hid from Saul and chose to spare his life. Driving further south along the Dead Sea we reach Masada (now a UNESCO World Heritage site) and ascend by cable car to visit the magnificent ruins of the fortress where Jewish defenders made the last stand of the Judean revolt against the Romans. We check in to the Leonardo Hotel along the shore of the Dead Sea with the remainder of the day at leisure to relax on the beach and swim in the Dead Sea. Dinner is included at the hotel this evening. (B,D)

DAY 6, THU, MAY 17 BEDOUIN VISIT/ARAD/BEERSHEVA/MARESHAH/ELAH VALLEY/JERUSALEM

This morning we experience Bedouin hospitality at Kfar Hanokdim, with a camel ride in the desert and refreshments served by our gracious Bedouin hosts. From there we go to Arad, a Canaanite city and Israelite citadel in the Negev of strategic importance due to its location along ancient roads. We visit Beersheva, city of the Patriarchs and capital of Negev, and then continue to Mareshah to see the Bell Caves, remains of ancient quarries. Our route to Jerusalem takes us through the Elah Valley, where the Philistines and Israelites faced off and where David defeated Goliath. We continue to Jerusalem, the "Holy City," and the Prima Royale Hotel for dinner and overnight. (B,D)

DAY 7, FRI, MAY 18 MOUNT OF OLIVES/GETHSEMANE/MT. ZION/BETHLEHEM

We travel past the Hebrew University and on to the Mount of Olives. At the top, we visit the Church of Pater Noster, whose walls are decorated with 140 ceramic tiles, each one inscribed with the Lord's Prayer in a different language. We walk down the traditional “Palm Sunday Walk” where Christ made his triumphal entry into Jerusalem, stopping at the Garden of Gethsemane with its ancient olive trees and the Church of All Nations. We then visit Mount Zion and the traditional Room of the Last Supper. We travel to Bethlehem (political situation permitting) and the Church of the Nativity, built over the traditional site of the birth of Christ. We drive by the Field of Shepherds, where the angel announced the birth of Jesus to shepherds, and return to Jerusalem for dinner and overnight. (B,D)

DAY 8, SAT, MAY 19 DEAD SEA SCROLLS/

VIA DOLOROSA/GARDEN TOMB

This morning we drive past the Knesset, the Israeli Parliament building, and visit the Shrine of the Book, which houses the original Dead Sea Scrolls. We also take some time to view the scale model of Jerusalem in the 1st century. In the Old City we visit St. Anne's Church and the Pools of Bethesda, and then we follow the Via Dolorosa, seeing Pilate’s Judgment Hall where Christ was imprisoned and concluding at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. We end our day at Gordon’s Calvary and the Garden Tomb, where in an inspiring service we celebrate the resurrection of our Lord. We return to our hotel for dinner and overnight. (B,D)

DAY 9, SUN, MAY 20 CITY OF DAVID/WESTERN WALL/DAVIDSON CENTER/YAD VASHEM/ABU GOSH/TEL AVIV

We begin this morning at Caiaphas' palace, where Jesus was first brought before the high priest. We then visit the City of David, the narrow hill near the Western Wall where Jerusalem "began." Here we view walls, towers, and fortifications that protected the city from enemies, pass through the water systems, see the Gihon Spring, and encounter the personalities and dwelling places of the city as reflected by archaeological discovery and in the Bible. At the Temple area we view the Western Wall and walk through the excavated Rabbinical Tunnels. We then visit the nearby Davidson Center, situated at the entrance to the Jerusalem Archaeological Park, one of the largest and most significant archaeological sites in the country. Nearby are the “Southern Steps,” leading to the original main entrance of the Temple Mount in the Second Temple period. It is certain that Jesus climbed these steps when he visited the temple in Jerusalem. We conclude our afternoon at the Holocaust Museum, Yad Vashem, a documentation in many forms of the history of the Jewish people during the Holocaust period. This afternoon we drive to Abu Gosh, a Christian-Arab village built on a mountainside that is synonymous with hummus - and not simple hummus but a wonderful, delightful mixture served in a variety of ways and with spicy garnishing! We enjoy dinner here and then transfer to the airport for our overnight flight to the USA. (B,D)

DAY 10, MON, MAY 21 RETURN USA

We arrive back in the USA and continue on to our hometown. (meals aloft)
